I would think it is just a simple thing they put on as a 'point-of-reference' for lack of a better term. Kinda like a vin#. How often do you really use it? But if you punch in the numbers you can get the history. If they get some bad resin or something on a particular day, they can see what numbers they produced that day and pull em. And obvious shipping and return info.
